The year 1895 marked the beginning of over a century of history for Lavazza, a history devoted exclusively to coffee. One family, four generations and a great passion have made Lavazza one of the world’s leading coffee roasters and retailers. Lavazza began as a small grocery shop at Via San Tommaso 10, opened by Luigi Lavazza in 1895. After specialising in coffee roasting and in wholesale and retail coffee sales, in 1927 the company became Luigi Lavazza S.p.A.
In the early Sixties, Lavazza became the first company in Italy to introduce vacuum-packed ground coffee. Lavazza’s ability to preserve the freshness and flavour of its product laid the foundation for its gradual conquest of the Italian market, and the company worked through a wide-reaching distribution system relying on numerous branches and a specialised sales network. The Paulista blend became particularly popular during this period. It was so successful that in 1965, the company substantially increased its production and opened a new factory in Settimo Torinese, which has become one of the most important production plants in the world. This was also the period Lavazza launched its advertising campaigns, becoming the undisputed leader with TV commercials featuring Caballero and Carmencita, the characters created by Armando Testa. The Eighties were marked by Lavazza’s expansion into the European markets, and in 1982 the first subsidiary was opened in Paris. Other subsidiaries soon followed in Germany, Austria, Great Britain, the United States, Spain and Portugal.
Every day 8 foreign subsidiaries and 6 Italian subsidiaries collaborate with them 1700 people work for the Group. The Group’s turnovers is €867 million.
